Like other regular water heaters, there are also some common problems in the Whirlpool electric water heating unit. Some of these problems are usually associated with electrical failure. Before contacting a professional assistance, there are some common possible causes of water heating problems that you should know & clearly understand so thus you may be able to troubleshoot your Whirlpool water heater on your own (DIY troubleshooting).

If your unit is still qualified to claim the warranty, make sure you have prepared the following information before calling the customer service:

Place/store/dealer where you purchase the unit.

Serial number of your Whirlpool water heater.

Model number of the unit.

And the date of installation!

The electric water heating unit is usually designed with electric heating elements. They have function to transfer the amount of heat to the water. When the desired temperature is reached, then a signal will be delivered to the system to stop the heating process.

In addition, when it comes for water heating models, there are available two popular types; Whirlpool tankless models (without tank-storage design) and conventional water heaters (with tank-storage design). Each model may need slightly different procedures of troubleshooting.

Problems associated with power

Power problem can make the unit be completely turned off (doesn’t work). Most of Whirlpool units are designed /equipped with several diagnostic lights to help you find out specific problems (including for power problems) – read your owner’s manual to find more detailed information the meaning of each code light!

Common solution; check the fuse and breaker, check also the control panel! Make sure all of them work properly!

Furthermore, there are 3 common possible causes of ‘no hot water’; power problem, the shut-down position of ‘high temperature limit’, and the failure of sensor.

The hot water temperature is higher than the desired temperature!

Sometimes, you may find a condition when the temperature of water heated is higher than the desired temperature.

The possible causes may include; the heating process itself, misplaced insulation, problem in thermostat itself, or sometimes also can be caused a faulty electrical current!

Poor heating or inadequate hot water!

For this case, the possible causes may include;

Poor insulation in the system, particularly for piping. Ensure also the connection of pipes is correctly installed!

There may be one leak or more in the plumbing system. Check also the faucets!

Poor size or lower size. Make sure your unit is not too lower on supplying your demand!

The storage tank has lime or sediment. Inspect the tank — you may need to do a water treatment.

Poor performance of heating elements.

Check also the performance of dick tube!

Water odor

One of common causes of water odor (like rotten egg smell) is the depletion of anode rod. Depleted anode rod also can lead to the corrosion which then also can contribute to create a leak.

Some conditions that can push/increase the progress of anode rod depletion may include; methods in water softening, high operation in producing hot water, hydronic heating devices, bad water quality, and frequently higher setting (too high) of temperature that you set in the thermostat! Therefore, the water odor is more common in older unit with older anode rod!

Generally, Whirlpool recommends inspecting the performance of anode rods at least once a year!

More noise when the unit is running!

There are some factors that can lead to more noise, which may include:

The improperly installation in metal parts and piping. But the noise is normal for contraction & expansion of these parts during periods of ‘cool down’ and ‘heat up’.

More sediment buildups! More noise can be created if there is more sediment in the bottom of the tank, even sometimes this condition also can lead to premature tank failure.

The heating elements of electric water heater have vital function to the mechanism of the unit to heat and supply the amounts of hot water for your demand. Therefore, without them or if they do not work properly then your water heating unit will not work optimally! And the big question is how to check the performance of these heating elements, so thus you can get the conclusion that they still work properly or not!

The electric energy is needed by the heating system to work. And through a thermostat, this energy is supplied to the heating elements. Then the electric energy will be converted to become the heat energy through the element tube. So, now you can understand how important is the function of these heating elements for electric water heater to heat up water.

Poor performance of a heating element will not optimally conduct or not able to conduct the electricity; and then finally the mechanism of converting from ‘electric energy to heat energy’ cannot work properly.

So, how to test and check the performance of heating elements and tell you that they are still in good condition or on the other hand you need to replace them?! The following are some basic tips for this issue:

First, find the disconnect switch or breaker panel of your water heater and then turn off completely your electric water heating unit. For better safety, you need to do ‘disconnect switch’ between the unit and the breaker panel, particularly if your unit is installed in the middle of your home rather than in your garage. Without a disconnect switch, you have to turn off the 30-amp double-pole breaker (located inside the breaker panel).

Then remove the panel door so thus you can clearly look the side of your water heating unit. Remove properly all screws that hold the position of the access panel door! After removing all screws, then try removing the door & insulation behind from it! There are usually available 2 access panel doors in most types of 30-gallon electric water heating units. These 2 doors are usually designed to accommodate 2 heating elements.

Then don’t forget to make sure that there no any power present! You can verify this issue by using a non-contact voltage tester and then touch the wires with it. Then find two screws that hold the wires, and then loosen them so thus you can remove easily both wires.

And to figure out the bad or good of heating elements, you can use a continuity tester. Attach the alligator clip of your continuity tester to one screw on heating element of your water heater. And then touch the other screw on the heating element to the needle from the continuity tester. If your continuity tester work out to light, then this means the heating element is still ‘good’, but on the other hand if the tester fails to light then this means the heating element is ‘bad’. Repeat this testing for another heating element.

As the name suggests tankless electric water heaters mean that there is not required or involved a tank to store and hold the amount of hot water temporarily (ahead of time), but they involve on-demand water heating mechanism which is so different to conventional electric water heating units that usually will heat an entire tank of water ahead of time. Storing hot water into a tank is not effective and can spend a lot of energy to keep warm the water in the tank. On the other hand, tankless design is purposed to only heat and supply hot water when it is only required, which is the key why this concept claimed more efficient and friendly to the utility bills that we must pay for each month.

How does a tankless electric water heater work?

As well we know that tankless units use the electricity energy and powerful heating element (powerful resistor which is a substance that can resist the flow of the electricity). The heating element will convert the electric energy to the heat energy that eventually will be used to heat the water and produce hot water when it is only needed. The heating element is usually sealed or covered inside a tube of water. A flow sensor is also functioned to detect that the water is flowing or flushing through the heater when we turn on the water heater tap! This sensor also has important function to turn on or turn off the heating element and to identify the flow rate of the water.

Today a flow sensor has been modified more modern and involves a microprocessor that has important function to gather the correct information about the amount of power needed to warm up the water at the temperature set point. There are also involved some internal heating modules which work to flow the water and eventually will exit from the heater at the desired temperature.

The sensor will keep working continuously to monitor the flow rate of the water and incoming the temperature’s water as long as the water is flowing and running. The flow rate data will be sent continuously to the microprocessor! So, the power supply for heating elements can be adjusted or modulated continuously in accordance with the alterations in incoming temperature & flow rate. And the unit will remain on until the faucet is closed. When the sensor is detecting that the flow rate has stopped flowing then the power is automatically turned off.

The process of water heating will take a couple of seconds, especially for the start-up process. In order to make easier for user to operate the unit, modern units are usually already designed and equipped with digital display & thermostatic control on the front of the unit.

How about with the heating efficiency?

Electric tankless units are one of best choices for home water heating appliance, especially if your local area is not available or impractical for natural gas. Although you may need to hire a professional plumbing for the installation but they are relatively easier for the installation than gas tankless water heaters because there is not needed to consider about the venting requirements for the installation. So, they are also relatively safer and you don’t have to worry about the depletion Oxygen problem in your home.

Although almost 100 percent of the electric energy will be converted to the heat energy, but unfortunately electric units are more expensive particularly on paying the energy bills (the price of the electricity is more expensive than propane or natural gas fuel). Overall, once again tankless concept works more effective and more efficient than conventional electric water tanks.

One of conventional home heating appliances is kerosene heaters. Like the name implies, they use kerosene as the fuel to warm up the air during winter or cold days. Today, there are two major different types of them, radiant and convection models. Radiant types usually do not involve wicks when working. On the other hand, convection types require wicks for the object of the ‘burned dry’. But in order to distribute the fuel to the catalytic converter (burner unit ‘the core of the heating system of a kerosene heater’) from the tank, both usually use a circular fiberglass. Either radiant or convection types can lead a serious risk (serious fire accident) if we ignore on how to use, maintain and refuel them properly.

The following are pieces of helpful information about safety and precautions checklists for kerosene heaters:

One of potential hazards is fire accident that usually could be caused by placing the unit too close to any objects that easily to burn or catch the fire, such as; draperies, wood furniture, combustible clothing, lacquers, aerosol sprays, etc. This fire accident usually begins by accidentally igniting the fuel when refueling the tank or knocking over an improper lighted heater. Even if the unit is operated in the improper area, like if there is available combustible fume, explosion could be happen.

According to the theory of ‘triangle of fire’, burning process involves three basic elements = air (O2), fuel, and igniter. So, the unit will consume O2 as it burns the kerosene fuel. The point is if we place or use the unit in an enclosed small room or in the room where does not have proper and adequate ventilation for air circulation then the volume of O2 in the room will decrease significantly and this situation will be so dangerous for human respiratory system. Moreover, the extremely reduction of O2 level will lead to improper combustion (incomplete condition) of fuel and on the other hand the volume of CO (carbon monoxide) will increase drastically. In addition, CO is odorless and colorless, and if breathed too over will lead to a serious poisoning ‘death’. So make sure the room is well ventilated.

The others pollutants that can be resulted from the combustion of kerosene are CO2, Nitrogen Dioxide, and Sulphur-Dioxide. For better safety, install CO and O2 detector in your room.

Other hazards of using kerosene heater that you should consider as well are ignition of stored-fumes, burns from accidentally touching a hot unit, the poisoning of the liquid kerosene, asphyxiation and even spillage of the over inflammable fuel.

Extinguish or turn off the unit while it is not needed!

Avoid using the unit to dry the wet clothes, or even to warm up the water or food!

Make sure you use the proper size unit. Don’t ever try using smaller unit to heat larger room or on the other hand, over size unit to heat smaller room. So consider the correct size carefully.

Safety and precautions checklists on how to refuel kerosene heater properly:

It is better to choose good quality of kerosene fuel (like 1-K grade type) in order to minimize fire and explosion hazards. Avoid choosing gasoline to refuel your unit!

Check the performance of the wicks (for convection types). Make sure they are properly set at the proper height. And once again, make sure your room is well ventilated.

For better safety, it is better to choose outside to refuel your unit than indoor (in your room where usually the unit is used).

Make sure the unit is completely turned off before refueling! Let it cool if necessary for better safety, because fuel could ignite while hitting hot surface of the heater!

While refueling, don’t fill the volume of the unit’s tank full completely, in order to give space for expansion of the kerosene fuel in the tank while it starts to warm. Moreover overfilling can lead to spillage.

Avoid using kerosene from a previous season (last winter) if necessary, because it could get spoiled! Store your kerosene fuel outdoor and don’t forget to use approved container with clearly label ‘Kerosene’ for storing!

For more detailed information, read the manual’s owner instructions, especially about the correct information for the duration of the refueled tank must stand at ambient temperature (room temperature) before starting to use your heater!

As the name implies, heater portable or portable heater is designed to be installed and moved more practically and easily, especially if compared to central heating system. It is typically popular when the central heating system is too costly or inadequate to operate. Portable units are relatively less expensive for initial purchase (free of installation costs because they can be installed relatively easier without requiring hiring a professional man)! They are also great idea to complement inadequate heating in your room. Moreover, for individuals who are too sensitive of cold, they can be a nice solution to boost the air temperature of room without needing to overheat the entire house first.

As well we know, based on the fuel-used category, there are some alternative portable heaters to choose from! Some of them are electric unit, gas unit, coal effect stove, radiant portable heater, catalytic heater portable, etc. Electric and gas portable heaters are usually the most popular.

Electric vs. gas portable heaters

Electric models are commonly more expensive (the operating cost is higher than if we choose to use gas combustion units). But they are generally popular choice for anyone who is looking for unvented portable space heaters which will work relatively safely. But this doesn’t mean that there are zero of potential fires and burns! So you should use them properly with caution. Below are general safety checklists when using them:

It is better to choose some of them that are already equipped with safety feature like a tip-over feature, which will be so helpful to shut off the unit automatically while the heating system is tipped-over.

Avoid using extension cord to plug them! It is much better to plug them into the wall electric outlet directly. But if there is no choice (you have to choose to use an extension cord), make sure you only choose a heavy-duty proper cord of “14-guage” -wire or bigger.

Generally, units that have 4.2 kilo Watt (maximum heat input) are designed to be used for a room larger than 35.779 m^2 (based on 2.4 meter of ceiling height).

And for units with 2.4 kilo Watt of maximum heat input are generally purposed to be used for a room bigger than 20.439 m^2 (based on 2.4 of ceiling height).

And for gas portable heaters, there are available two major choices, vented and unvented models! Unvented models are relatively easier to install since there is not involved venting installation, but they are not allowed to be used inside of the house (enclosed area), because will deplete O2 volume and produce unfriendly combustions products like CO and Nitrogen Oxides! Therefore, today they have banned to be used in the most states, especially for use inside of the house. And below are general safety checklists on how to use gas heater portable safely:

Avoid placing and installing your unit in the areas (like bathroom & garage) where petrol vapor is present.

Once again, make sure you locate and install your unit in the well-ventilated room!

Check the performance of your heater at least once a year. So, it is not too bad idea by signing a contract with a professional to inspect your unit once a year. Moreover, the maintenance is important and closely associated to the efficiency performance.

Catalytic heating units

They are great choice if you seriously want to participate on reducing CO (Carbon Monoxide) emissions. They can be categorized into flame-free type and therefore will be ideal to be used for garages or workshops. They are real portable unit which always smaller in size, and therefore much more practical to be moved or stored.

Radiant models

As the name suggests, they heat the air with the radiant thermodynamic principal. They heat infrared-rays then will be radiated out and eventually will be absorbed by objects like people, floor, etc. The increased level of temperature of these objects finally will heat and warm up the air surrounding. One big benefit on using this type is quite noiseless because there are not involved fans or blowers to transfer the heat.

In addition, the following are basic tips on choosing and buying portable space heaters:

For better safety, prioritize choosing unit that has UL (Underwriter’s Laboratory) label. It indicates that the unit is designed with the newer models of the current safety design.

For more energy saving, you can choose unit that has a thermostatically controller.

Choose the correct size as well as the large area of your room that will be heated. Avoid buying oversize unit!

And don’t forget to consider the long lifetime warranty!

Infrared light is invisible light because it has spectrum wavelengths that are beyond the wavelength spectrums we can see normally. This is the key why we cannot see the heat of infrared light product from infrared heater. So how does infrared heater work? Well, as the name suggests, it use the invisible infrared lights to heat directly the objects surrounding it. But how we or any objects near of the unit will get warm? The answer is due to the absorption process of the invisible lights into the surface (molecules) of the object or through our skin (or our clothes). We can figure out this clearly when we get warm in the sun (the lights of the sun will heat your skin or your clothes directly, so thus you will keep warm). On the other hand, if you are sitting in the shade of the sunlight, then you will not get the heat directly. Take a few minutes to read pieces of helpful information below on understanding how does infrared heater work!

Understanding radiation of infrared

Infrared radiation can be categorized into electromagnetic radiation. So it is similar like radio and light waves. Visible light has higher frequency than infrared radiation, and therefore infrared lights cannot be seen normally by human eyes. And theoretically, while the temperature level of an object gets higher (warmer), it will result more radiation of invisible infrared lights at a higher level of frequency.

About infrared heating!

You might remember that there are three ways of distributing the heat that are conduction, convection and radiation.

1. Conduction is the heat distribution process which involves a material to move or distribute the heat energy. Example: if we have a metal spatula and we leave it in a hot pan, and in a few minutes we will find that the temperature of the handle increases significantly. In this case, the heat spread to all surface of metal spatula (including the handle) with conduction principle.

2. Convection is the heat distribution process which use material (like water and air) for the heat-transit to move the heat energy. Example, hydronic heater that use water pipeline (installed under the floor) to distribute and spread the heat into the room.

3. And the third type is radiation. It is adopted by infrared heaters to warm up objects surrounding them. At particular wavelength, infrared radiation tends to be absorbed by molecules. And like mentioned earlier, when the molecules (object) absorb the infrared radiation then theoretically the molecules be heated up. So, infrared heaters are tuned to result the correct wavelength for whatever they are designed and purposed to heat.

Efficiency performance

One benefit of infrared heating technology is that it can be properly set to heat a specific thing! A heating coil element has vital function to determine a specific wavelength in order to make sure the infrared radiation can be absorbed by the molecules of the object that will be heated. The coil can be tuned to produce so high temperature (mostly 999.99 degrees Celsius or even more (depending on the model of the infrared heater itself what will be used to heat for)). Example, for infrared heaters that are purposed to create sauna effect, they are tuned with the right wavelength to only heat the water and sore muscles of human body. There are also some of them that are tuned to heat a specific kind of metal or plastic (industrial applications). And almost of the energy will be used to heat the target, so there is so little of the heat energy wasted.

Are you looking for gas water heater with the best warranty? If you are looking for a qualified energy star products, according to energystar.gov; conventional combustion water heaters (with tank) should be designed with 67 of FHR (first-hour rating) and 0.8 of EF (energy factor). They should have at least 8 years for the lifetime warranty on sealed system! For gas tankless units, they should be qualified for at least 2.5 of GPM (Gallon per minute) with 77 degrees Fahrenheit for the temperature rise and 0.82 of EF! And they should have at least 5 years lifetime warranty on parts and 10 years lifetime warranty on heat exchanger. First-hour rating indicates how much the amount (in Gallon) of hot water that can be produced by a storage water heating unit for each hour. GPM means how much the amount of hot water (in Gallon) that can be generated by a tankless unit for each minute with 77’ Fahrenheit for the temperature rise!

However, there are a lot of products of gas water heaters to choose from. And they are offered with different warranty. As well we know, there are some crucial points that we have to take into consideration before making deal. The energy efficiency rating and Energy Star approval are so important to make sure the unit will keep working properly and efficiently in long term and last longer. And by also considering the warranty we can save more money in the future.

So, how to find and choose the best warranty gas water heater?

Make a reasonable budget! It will be helpful for you to compare different models effectively. Calculate also the size of the unit that you should purchase so thus it will be powerful enough to supply the demand of hot water for daily activities of you and your family.

Find more information about any products that you are considering to purchase, especially about the upfront cost differences! In many cases, for different models (with the same brand) usually will be offered with a variety of warranties. Instance, you may find 11 years warranty for Rinnai tankless units on the online review sites but it does mean that all Rinnai tankless products come with 11 years warranty. So, find and consider carefully which the warranty of a certain model that you want to purchase.

If the budget permits to pay more, prioritize to choose unit that is offered slightly more expensive in price. In most cases, the price is equivalent to the quality and also offered with longer-duration of warranty.

There are usually several popular selections, such as six years, nine years and twelve years. But prioritize to choose unit that has at least 12 years for the warranty that usually will be more durable and more efficient on consuming the energy (lower energy bill).

Check the type of the water in your local area! If in your local area has not-soft water, then it is better to choose and buy heater with the longer warranty. Don’t miss also to consider the safety features (especially for combustion heaters)!

Well, one of crucial issues that you might be so familiar to consider when choosing and installing heaters is the size (BTUs). Therefore it is so important to calculate the size correctly in order to make sure the unit will work more efficient and optimal. Wrong calculation will make the heating system work poorly and inefficiently. Moreover, the wrong size also will lead to the more quickly failure of the system. Generally, the sizing calculation of pool heaters is relatively similar to the size calculation of other regular heating units, but there are some factors that we should take into consideration as well. And basically, we just only need two important variables; the square feet large surface of the pool and the temperature rise in Fahrenheit.

The other factor that must be concerned is the average speed of the wind. Don’t forget also to consider the level of the humidity. Those factors can influence on how to calculate the size of pool heater that you should install. Once again the size calculation is so important to make sure the heating system can heat the pool powerfully. Lower size will not be able to keep the proper temperature, and on the other hand over size is not too good idea for the efficiency performance (you will lose a lot of money on paying the higher energy bill)! Generally, the sizes are usually rated on BTUs (British Thermal Units). So, how to determine the size (BTU) for your pool heating unit?

Below is simple guide to determine the approximate size:

First calculate the temperature rise! It can be determined => subtract the desired temperature by the average ambient temperature of the water (or you can choose the lowest ambient temperature of the water for an extreme cold season so thus the heating system will work powerful enough). In addition, the desired temperature is usually around 85-75 degrees Fahrenheit. Moreover, calculating the average ambient temperature of the water for indoor pool (almost can be called ‘enclosed area’) is relatively easier and you can find it by checking the thermostat. On the other hand, this step is not easy for outdoor pool; therefore you may need to call the National Weather Authorize for more detailed information.

Then calculate the approximate square feet of the pool surface. How to determine it is dependent on the shape of the pool itself. And this step is so easy for rectangular & square shapes (just multiply the length by the width) and circle shapes (just multiply 3.14 by the square feet of the length). For more advance shapes or irregular shapes, you may need to discuss with a HVAC contractor in your local area for more detailed information.

Then use the simple formula “temperature rise x square feet pool surface x 12” to get the BTU per hour output (size) requirement of the pool heaters. This calculation is based on a 3-0.5 mile/hour of average wind on the surface of the pool and 1 degree Fahrenheit to 0.25-1 degrees Fahrenheit temperature rise for each hour. For more extreme pool season, (in order to make the heating system work more powerful) multiply again the result by 2 for a 2 degrees Fahrenheit temperature rise, and by 1.5 for a 1 degree Fahrenheit to 1-0.5 degree Fahrenheit temperature rise!

What else you should know on calculating the BTU size:

You may need a larger size of pool heater if in your local area has lower humidity, lower temperatures, and higher winds.

Don’t forget to check the energy rating of the heater! If you seriously want to keep your energy bill low, choose one that can run more efficient. Instance, if a 210,000 BTU pool heater has 90 percent of the energy efficiency rating; this means the unit will only produce 189,000 BTU for all practical purposes.

The other nice idea to encourage the efficiency is by also using a proper solar pool cover. It will be helpful enough to minimize the energy loses (the evaporation process of warmed water).

The heat energy can travel from one location to another location with three ways; convection, conduction and radiation. Let’s concern to the last type! As well we know that there are a lot of heating appliances that use radiant heat principle, either to heat outdoor areas or indoor areas. Historically, there are some experts who have opinion that radiant heat technology had been used in the ancient civilization of China and Roman Empire. In ancient times, traditional radiant heating application is the emitting radiant heat through some warm elements, such as wall, floor, and overhead panel. Then by heat the air directly, all people around feel better of a warm condition temperature.

Based on the performance to heat the air quickly or not, radiant heating technology is better than convection heating. Today, we can find a lot of heating systems that use radiant heat principle, some of them are fired radiant heat technology, hydronic floor heating, electric under floor heating), radiant ceiling appliances, infrared heaters, portable space heaters, and so on. For outdoor use, the directly heating is also so beneficial. It will be so helpful to heat the objects directly without needing to heat the surrounding air first. Without radiant heating principle (directly heating principle), it is too hard to warm up the outdoor area, like patio because will be required a huge energy to warm up the entire air in the patio.

To encourage the efficiency, it is better to also install the insulation in your house. There are some people who have opinion that using the radiant heat technology is always will be more efficient. This statement is not always true, particularly if the design of the house is not match to radiant heat demand. So consider carefully the size BTUs output of the radiant heater that you want to choose and install also the insulation system if necessary.

As like mentioned before, radiant floor heating system is one of popular choices of integrated radiant system to warm up the entire house in the winter. It offers more comfortable performance, more efficient in energy use and also will be good investment in long term. Although there are some reviews on internet say that the installation can finished on your own, but it is much better to hire a qualified installer to make sure the system is installed properly. Below are pieces of helpful information for the installation:

You should do to training yourself. This idea will help you to learn more about how to make the system work properly at its efficiency performance and also be helpful for you to know lot of more about radiant heat technology.

Then the next step that you should do is to find and choose the right qualified installer. The qualified installer will help to ensure all mechanical components are installed as well so thus the system can work properly.

Some factors that you should concern as well are; the warranty of product, learn more which one component that can work well together, the capacity (size) and make sure the system that you want install is qualified with the authorized codes in your local area. And all those factors can be analyzed as well by hiring the right one of qualified installers.

Make sure to only choose a certified radiant contractor! And prioritize a local heating contractor! Visit the RPA’s membership to make sure the company that you want to choose is a certified contractor.
