Talking about home heaters is often referred to central heating that must be powerful enough to heat the entire home. But there are also some home heating system installed and designed to heat several certain rooms in a home. Well, today we can find a lot of choices when it comes to heating. And if you are looking for home heating systems, you may find several types to choose, such as; electric central heating, oil central heating, gas central heating, and eco-friendly home heating systems. What is the best type you should choose?

Electric home heating

As the name suggests, the heating system is powered by electricity energy. Therefore, there are many homeowners who have perception that this choice is the safest ventless system (we don’t have to worry about the venting mechanism for the installation, because the system is powered by electricity or non-combustion fuel). One of popular choices for more cost-effective option is storage heaters. They use a cheaper –night-time- rate to warm up distinctive heat-retaining bricks.

Electric storage heaters will give out the slowly heat and maintain the warmth for the whole of the following day. If you want to get more energy saving, you can also use cheaper-rate of electricity to supply an amount of hot water through an immersion heater in the tank of your hot water heater.

However, there are pros and cons of electric central heating that you have to concern before making decision:

Cons:

The fuel (electricity) is usually priced more expensive than the gas prices. Moreover, the electricity prices are fluctuating and even it tends to rise day by day.

We cannot get instant control over the storage heating. You may need to wait a few minutes or more for the optimum temperature level (the system is not quick enough when heating the home).

Storage heaters are typically not equipped with an automatic charge control.

Pros:

Unlike natural gas pipelines that are not available in any areas, electricity is available in almost areas and relatively safer (it doesn’t involve the combustion process).

Like written before, you don’t have to consider first about the venting mechanism for the installation.

The system is typically designed with very few moving parts, therefore it has excellent for the maintenance (less care or less cost for the maintenance).

The up-front cost is cheaper than gas central heating, because there is not involved the installation of flue or pipe (pipe-work).

Home oil-central-heating

This system will be popular if in your local area is not available for the mains gas network! Oil central heating systems are typically installed in a ‘wet’ system where the boiler heats the ambient water, which will supply hot water via the taps and provide comfortable central heating through radiators.

Cons:

Oil prices are not too friendly at these days.

There is possibility to run out the fuel because oil is usually delivered by road, especially when you are waiting for the next delivery.

The up-front cost for the installation is also not cheap. Moreover, there is also unsightly problem of the storage tank, but it can be solved by an underground tank option.

The system need annually service (more cost for the maintenance).

The flow rate on producing an amount of hot water is lower or less powerful than a gas combi.

The system requires combustion process when working, so thus there is an amount of CO (carbon monoxide) that must be vented properly otherwise can lead to O2 depletion and poisoning problem.

Pros:

When talking about the efficient of fuel (oil) then it can be categorized into a highly efficient fuel.

There are now available the newest condensing boilers that can reach efficiencies of 90 percent or even more. This is nice idea for more energy savings.

Gas central heating

Gas central heating is divided into two major options, natural gas (methane) and propane (usually stored into a pressurized tank or LPG). First let’s discuss about pros and cons for natural gas home heaters.

Cons of natural gas central heating:

The up-front costs are expensive (the installation involves gas pipe network).

The natural gas prices are not cheap and also on the rise at these days!

The system requires annually servicing, especially for gas boilers.

Produce CO when working, although the amount of CO resulted is slightly lower than when we are using oil heaters, but it is still so important to make sure the venting system is correctly installed!

Pros of natural gas central heating:

Although the gas prices are also expensive at this time, but it is slightly cheaper than the electricity prices.

More powerful and more quickly on heating.

There is not needed the procedure to store the fuel (like in the oil central heating and propane home heating), so thus will be safer.

The newest condensing boiler is now available and can work more efficient.

And now for propane (LPG) central heating systems!

Cons:

The propane prices are also on the rise.

The propane is stored into pressurized tank, therefore there is possibility that we could run of the fuel. The pressurized propane gas in the pressurized tank also can lead to fire-pressure explosion, like BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion), therefore you must be careful more when using this central heating system.

The up-front costs are also expensive and you have to hire a professional contractor (the installation is too difficult to be finished on your own).

The boilers also require servicing annually.

The system must be vented properly to push out an amount of carbon monoxide (one of byproducts of the combustion process).

Pros:

Propane also can be categorized into a highly efficient gas fuel that will be so beneficial to get a good return on lower utility bills. It also produces lower CO than oil fuel.

With modern condensing boilers, the system will work more and more efficient.

This system is good option if you want to use combustion gas central heating but there is not available natural gas supply in your local area.

Eco-friendly home heating systems

This choice is also often referred to renewable energy option and friendlier to the environment (the biggest advantage if we choose to use this system). And according to which.co.uk, below is helpful table that describes cost of renewable energy systems:

Source: which.co.uk

mobile home furnace

As like we know well, we should to use and ask to a qualified professional service to check our home furnaces when we find some problems. Better it do before we use the unit to face long time winter season with extreme cold temperature. Although we have to pay some amount dollar to pay a professional service, but we get the safety guarantee that our home heater can run well, keep with its optimal performance, and safe. Because we know well a qualified professional service has good experience and qualified to make ensure all procedure run well.

Most experts, getting the best result better we do the test procedure by using a qualified professional technician. But as long as we think we can do the procedure self, maybe we should try. Basically for the units of home heaters that don’t have complicated installation and maintenance, we can follow the procedure easily by following to the manufacture’s guidelines for the maintenance properly. In spite of the maintenance, we should also concern about how to operate the unit properly. We can do some simple things but usually can helpful to ensure our home heater or furnace units can work with optimal performance and properly.

The first simple procedure that we can do self is by always to check the air filters. If we think they should be cleaned then we can do self or even if we think we must replace with new so why not we can do it as soon as possible. Usually the standard filter types must we check to ensure they still work well monthly, it so depend to their types. There are some types of them that have good quality can survive well longer than one month or more. Therefore better we try to use a quality pleated filter types.

The drain trap and hose are also influence significantly how our home furnace keep run with the optimal performance. Therefore we should to clean and remove the blockage in the furnaces drain. The other general problem when we are using home furnaces is about the performance of the exhaust PVC furnace pipes. The pipes usually install outside of the house, and sometimes there are shrubs and trees grown into the pipes. Solving this problem by removing the PVC exhaust pipes and the air intake from the home furnace unit, then we can be lavish to check and remove for any things which may have gotten into PVC pipes.

Then by using the factory plug harness connections we can make ensure that the wire connection is correctly. If we find that the heat exchanger, the flame sensor, pressure switches, limit controls feature or other mechanism systems got trouble, better we use a qualified technician to make ensure everything return wok well again.

Theoretically, there are five points that so influence how home furnaces can work. The five points are below:

Thermostat, it has important function to set and monitor how high the temperature inside of the room. It is also useful to pre-set level warm temperature if temperature inside drop significantly. Overall it can help us to set warm temperature as long as we want constantly.

Then where gas is housed in the combustion, burned and fed? The answer is in burner. Usually in the burner already equipped with the pilot light to keep small light beside the burner.

Heat exchanger, generally it has important function to transfer and distribute the heat effectively from one medium to another.

Ductworks, usually they have the wrapped with insulating materials typically to keep the heat not lose or stay inside into the ductworks. They have important function to distribute and carry the already heated air or warm air to whole space of various rooms in our house. Usually in air force heater units they have multi-function so not only to distribute warm air but also to take back cold air into the heat exchanger that will return heated.

If we use home furnaces that use combustion fuel like gas, oil, propane, and else. The usually the unit has the flue. It has important function as the exhaust pipe of the unit.

When people want to buy or want to build up the house, one of the first issues usually concerned is about the heating system in different room of the house such as kitchen room, dining room, living room, and bedroom. But there are some areas that usually ignored, one of them is bathroom. Unheated bathroom can cause frozen pipe of water and finally can stop the distribution of the hot water supply especially for bathing or shower demand. Some people think that heating bathroom can use any kinds of heaters but this is not true! Heating bathroom requires a specific heating unit so thus this area is not only far away from extremely cold temperature in the winter but also far away from any mildew, bacteria or even moisture! Well, there are a lot of models and types of bathroom heaters! Which one that you should choose?

Most of bathroom heaters come with white color in style. Generally, this color is in line with the domination color of many bathrooms. And like other regular heating appliances, first of all before deciding to purchase the best type of them, measure the large square feet of your bathroom so thus you will have a data to determine the right size of the heater that you have to choose! The size is not only important to ensure the unit will work powerful but also closely related to the efficiency and even will be helpful to make your heater last longer or not! Standard bathrooms usually have 12’ by 10’ that usually will require 1800 Watt to 1440 watt of electric bathroom heater.

If you ask what is the best bathroom heaters? Then the answer is closely dependent to your requirement and the design of your bathroom itself! The other idea, you can search a lot of information by visiting some credible and independent review sites, like consumer report sites or by searching through some popular search engines (like Google & Bing). Based on the way to install and to heat the bathroom, they can be categorized into several types and models, some of them are; baseboard-designed heating units, ceiling mounted units, bulb-designed models, wall-mounted units and even towel bathroom heating units! Which is the best type of them? Once again the answer is closely associated to the design of your bathroom itself and your own requirements. Well…let’s explore more those types below!

Bathroom heaters with baseboard design

In order to prevent any water get into the electrical component of the unit, baseboard bathroom heaters are typically completely sealed & covered by the copper tubing so thus the heat transfer fluid will be safe enough from accidentally flooding. They are also typically designed with radiant heating principle on the way to heat the area. Therefore they can work quickly on heating the room but will not be powerful enough to keep warm the bathroom after you turn off the unit.

But if you are worry to your bathtubs and children, and also nervous to the installed electrical appliances in your bathroom, it is better to look for another type!

Ceiling mounted models

For space saving, ceiling bathroom heaters are welcome idea. As the name suggests, they can be installed and mounted into the ceiling so thus will be very beneficial for space saving and also you don’t have to worry that anyone accidentally touches the hot surface of the heater (better safety). And they are also typically designed with white-painted in style so thus will be nice choice for many bathrooms that usually also have white color for the dominated-color.

The height recommendation for the installation to mount the heater onto the ceiling is around 8 feet from the bathroom floor and 6 inches away from the bathroom walls. The installation is permanent and if you in doubt to do it on your own, you can contact a professional installer in your local area so thus the unit will be correctly installed.

Bulb bathroom heating units

They come with more unique style and this is the key of their popularity why you should choose the best one of them! Their beautiful design is usually designed with a silver or white finish. And as the name implies, their appearance is closely similar to the light-bulbs.

In many cases, the bulbs are offered separately (not one package with the bulb heater), this means the price of the unit usually does not include one package with the price for bulbs! But there are also some brands that offer the price of the unit includes price for bulbs.

Moreover, there are also some brands that offer these units with an exhaust fan while others do not! Units with exhaust fan are usually priced relatively more expensive than units that don’t have exhaust fan! The cost to purchase is also influenced by the number of bulbs on the heater (around $150-$70 for 2 bulbs and around $230 for 4 bulbs).

Wall-mounted bathroom heaters

We can say that this type is the most popular for heating the bathroom at these days. They are typically available either for 120V or 240 V, with 1500 watts for the size. But you can also find them with higher in Watt size!

And as the name implies, they must be mounted on the wall for the ideal place of the installation (as beneficial as like ceiling-mounted units for space saving). Even we can find the ones that can be installed on top of the wall which usually come with more fairly-slim in design.

The last, if you are looking for a unit that not only can be functioned to keep warm your bathroom but also will be useful to keep warm your towel, then towel bathroom heater is not too bad choice, which can snugly fit onto the wall. This type is usually not too familiar to be used for the primer heating unit for bathroom but more specially purposed for additional unit to keep dry and warm the towel as well as the name suggests.

Electric radiant floor heating

Radiant heating is often associated to the directly heating! It involves the directly supplying heat to the ceiling, wall or to the floor of the room. And this method usually can heat the object more quickly with directly heating performance. The width of the radiant heat transfer (or familiar known as infrared radiation) will give a significant effect to speed of the system to heat the object. And you might be familiar with radiant floor heating! Basically it is the radiant heating located in the floor so thus the system will warm up first the bottom of the room (the floor). And there are a lot of advantages that we can get when using this method to keep warm in the winter.

With directly heating principle, radiant heating works more efficient, especially if compared to forced-air system and baseboard heating system because there are no energy loses through the ducts. Furthermore, with lower of moving air will be so beneficial to anyone who suffers from allergies. And if you are looking for one that can work with eco-friendly technology, hydronic floor heating system is nice idea. It heats the room with liquid-based and only use less electric energy to work and more efficient. The hydronic system can be powered by electric energy, gas fuels (natural gas or propane), solar energy, wood-fired boiler system, and so on.

Radiant floor heating

When talking about this method, there is not only used a single radiant heating principle to distribute the heat! But the system also involves the convection heat distribution to distribute and raise the heat from the floor in the room with naturally circulation of the convection heat. One thing that should be kept in mind “radiant panels applied in ceiling & walls are not same (significantly different) to radiant floor heating”.

Generally, there are 3 popular types of radiant floor heating (based on the installation and the way to generate the radiant heating energy):

The floor heating with electric heating elements installed under the floor.

Hydronic system with hot water distributed under the floor.

And air heated floor heating!

Let’s explore more those different types below!

Electric radiant floor heating systems

They are usually consisted of a lot of electric heating cables installed into the room’s floor. There are also available systems with mats of electrically plastic-conductive and mounted onto the sub-floor under the floor covering like tiles.

Today, we all agree that the cost of electricity is not cheap! Therefore they will be cost-effective if we also install a significant thermal mass (like a concrete-thick floor) & time-of-use rates service from your electric supply company. You can –charge- the concrete floor in the off-peak hours from the time-of-use rates (the off period of peak hours usually around 9 pm-6 am).

The proper large floor-thermal mass will be helpful to store the heat more powerful and eventually will keep the home warm & comfortable four more than 8 hours without needing any further electric energy input anymore (especially for daytime that usually relatively warmer than temperatures in the nighttime).

Hydronic heat-radiant floor systems

They are one of the most favorite choices for cost-effective radiant heating and powerful enough for any areas that have heating-dominated season. This system work with the heated-water based that pumped from a proper boiler through tubing installed & positioned in a pattern underneath the room floor. To control the temperature for each room of the house, the system involves the tubing loop (zoning-valve design) that has the mechanism to control the flow of hot water.

And for the up-front cost of the installation is dependent on the size, floor covering design, location, type or design of installation, labor’s cost and site’s remoteness!

Air heated floor radiant heating systems

Theoretically, the air is not able to hold large amounts of the heat energy, therefore this type is not too recommended because not too cost-effective for residential use. Although this type can be combined with solar heating technology but will not be powerful enough to supply the heat in the nighttime! Moreover air-heater radiant floor systems use a conventional furnace to pump the air through the surface of the floor, and this process works not too efficient. With these drawbacks, this type is seldom used & installed for residential applications.

Read also simple guide to troubleshoot your baseboard heater & fire hazards for outdoor heaters that you should consider as well!

In the winter, if you have a project that must be finished in your garage then usually you will find the temperature in your garage can be extremely unfriendly (cold) even relatively colder than other rooms in your home! Therefore you need the right garage heater so thus you can finish your project successfully and comfortably. And like mentioned frequently before, there are a lot of types and models of garage heaters to choose, from one that can be installed not-permanently to other that must be permanently installed, from one that is powered by electricity energy to other with powered by propane, natural gas, kerosene, solar energy, etc! Whatever your selection, one thing that must be prioritized is the safety issues. Make sure your unit is safe enough either for you or for your family.

Common safety issues when using garage heater

One of popular heater for heating garage is portability designed for more practical installation and more practical operating. The portable model can be moved easily from one position to another; this is so helpful feature but sometimes can generate serious hazards that must be anticipated as well. Make sure you place the portable unit far away from any flammable materials that can result fire hazard, such as petrol, papers, wood and so on! Moreover, the mobile feature will increase the probability of tilt-over accident. Therefore it is much better to choose only portable unit that has automatically shut off feature when the heater get tilt-over.

More general safety checklists on how to use garage heater safely:

Avoid using any form of open fluless or flue appliance in your garage, especially if there are a lot of vapors from flammable materials that are being stored, like paint, kerosene, petrol, etc.

If you choose to use combustion unit, make sure it is properly vented. Poor installation of venting not only will generate serious hazards but also can lead to the heat loses (energy loses) that eventually will influence to the efficiency of the unit when working.

Don’t use improper extension cord, especially if you choose to utilize electric unit. This is simple precaution but will be helpful enough to prevent the fire accident due to the overload electric current or short-circuit accident.

It is better to turn off the unit if you want to leave your home or garage more than 3 hours.

Consider the size carefully? Make sure your unit is sized correctly. It is not only associated to the efficiency performance but also will be helpful to minimize overheating problem and make the heating system last longer.

Other safety checklists & ideas on using garage heater

You have to place the unit in the level surface or stable location. Make sure there are no any stuffs or furniture that might fall over to the heater.

If there is available mat or rug, make sure that the electric cords are not located underneath mat or rug.

There are some flammable materials which many people still not clearly understand to their potential risk that can generate fire accident. Some of them are solvent and paint! Make sure to keep far away these flammable materials to the heater.

Prepare and use an appropriate fire guard if you have pets and children who frequently coming out &in to the garage, for better safety.

Avoid using older unit that is no longer to work properly.

If you use propane unit, and you want to replace the empty tank, don’t forget to open all windows and doors of your garage before beginning to replace the propane-storage tank (connect and disconnect the tank from the heater) for better safety of well air circulation into the garage if there is a gas leak.

Don’t ever try to use your heater to dry wet clothes or for cooking.

And for more detailed information, read also the owner’s manual guideline of your garage heater, especially any points about on how to operate and maintain your unit properly!

If you ask what are the few areas used for a number of projects then garage is one of the answers. Beyond just parking your car or other vehicles, this area is a place for number of project, all year round (including in the winter). You need the right one of garage heaters to keep your garage productive and keep friendly in the winter. Well, you might clearly understand that there are a lot of types, brands and products to choose from. And you may be confused to determine the best one of them for heating your lovely garage. One thing that you have to keep remembering is that not all products that are currently available in the marketplaces have equal performance!

Nowadays, a more variety different types of garage heaters are available! And one of them is propane radiant heater which is widespread and utilized by a number of household for different uses. Whatever your selection, the efficiency performance and safety issue should be on your first list that you have to prioritize! The safety issue is so important and crucial because there are usually a lot of paint, petrol, papers, wood, even kerosene in the garage that can lead to the fire accident and can be so dangerous for you and your family! Make sure all of those flammable materials away from your heater. Based on the fuel-used, garage heaters are available in two popular choices; combustion unit (mostly with propane) and electric unit. And like mentioned before, based on the way to heat up the area, mostly they come with radiant heating design.

Radiant garage heaters

As the name suggests, this type heat up the people (object) directly in the same way the radiant of the sun light does, so thus the unit does not heat first the entire air inside of the room. This radiant heat will make anyone feel warm quickly. But this directly heating cannot work powerful if you are too far from the heater, therefore you have to keep the ideal distance to the unit otherwise you will feel less warm in the cold days of winter and autumn. Moreover, this type is usually not designed with the blowing fan to distribute the heat into the room, because the heat from the heating elements will be radiated outwards.

In addition, radiant heating method is also popular due to its unique performance that can be used as spot heating. With this technique, we can heat a certain spot of the room more powerfully without needing to heat the entire air of the room. This is the reason of the popularity of radiant garage heaters that will make them work more efficient and faster.

Gas (combustion) garage heaters

For this type, like mentioned before propane model is the most popular although there are also available some powered with natural gas fuel. The propane fuel is usually stored into a pressurized tank and this tank is portable and can be moved and replaced practically, so thus if your local area is not available for natural gas service then propane garage heating unit is welcome idea. It is powerful enough and available in a wide range of size for different square feet area of garage.

Pros:

Relatively more affordable for the cost of operation and more efficient (if compared to the electric model).

The pressurized propane tank is portable and can be installed and replaced practically.

More powerful on heating.

Cons:

The unit must be vented properly!

Improper venting installation can give a significant effect to the efficiency performance of the heater.

Sometimes the price of propane could be higher than the price (KWH (the cost/ kilowatt-hour)) of the electric energy.

In addition, if your local area is available for natural gas service then it is much better to use natural gas than propane, because relatively safer and more affordable for cost of operation.

Garage electric heaters

It is undeniable that this type is the easiest option to warm up your garage. And there are a lot of powerful models to choose from, and most of them usually more practically and easier to be installed. The standard size of this type is usually available for heating 500 sq-ft areas.

One thing you should consider before dealing to use this model, make sure you have enough power to run the unit, at least you must have a 100 Ampere service, depending the size specification of the unit that you want to purchase. Unlike combustion units, electric units do not need the venting installation and they are safe ventless units.

In addition, although there are some people who say that using electric garage heaters are relatively safer but for better safety, it much better to always make sure that your electric unit is unplugged while not in use. Avoid also using an improper extension cord that can lead to fire accident!

Check this one if you are looking for one of them that can be mounted on the wall of your garage!

One of natural gas wall heaters

Types that you should know!

Some of combustion wall heaters work by convection heating principle. This working principle means that the unit heats the object not directly but through the surrounding air of the object. But there are also some that work with radiant heating principle to heat the object directly. Most of radiant-heat gas wall heaters (propane and natural gas units) usually use a ceramic panel to powerfully radiate the heat into the room and heat directly the object. And based on the venting mechanism, there are two major types; vented-units and ventless units! As the name suggests, vented model must be vented properly to make sure the unit will work powerful and efficient. And on the other hand, ventless model does not require venting system to work.

The working principle

How does ventless system of unvented-gas wall heater work?

It draws O2 for combustions from the air in your room. Then the heated-exhaust will be directed back into the room with radiant heating principle or convection heating principle (depending on the design of the unit itself). The direct venting will give advantage to prevent the energy losses from manual venting and this is the key why ventless units are claimed more efficient than vented-units. But unfortunately, the ventless design is not as safe as vented-design. There are several potential risks that can be so dangerous for you and your family. As well we know that the combustion process of gas will generate several unfriendly particles and pollutants, like CO (carbon monoxide). And if the volume of CO is too high then will lead to the depletion level of O2 in the room. Therefore, there are several states that prohibit and ban the use of ventless combustion units.

Although, the modern of ventless gas wall heaters are now equipped with the Oxygen depletion sensor for the safety feature, but it is much more recommended to avoid using them for indoor use! But if you are stiff to use this type, don’t forget to make sure that your room is well ventilated!

How does venting system of vented-units work?

This type utilizes O2 from the outside for the combustion process. O2 will be transferred into the heater by a vent that is usually located on the bottom of the unit! And vented-units are much safer than ventless units because all harmful pollutants (especially CO) will be pushed out to the outside by the vent (located at the top of the unit) and then will be directed through exhaust pipe to outside (open air) of the house.

The most familiar features

There are some familiar features that we can find in a regular wall heater:

Two features that have important function to maintain the discharge of the heat are thermostat and blower.

Two kind of flames, infrared flame (powerful to radiate the heat onto surfaces & objects) and blue flame (theoretically can work more efficient to warm up a room)!

Gas wall heaters are available in two major fuels (propane and natural gas). And we can find some with single fuel feature and other with dual fuel feature (can work well without needing conversion).

And as the name implies, wall heater are supported to be mounted on the wall easily. This installation can be easy or difficult, depending on the design of each product.

What else you should know about gas wall heaters?

They are room heating appliance and cannot be used to heat the entire home! But you can try with coal or pellet stove and then locates it in the place of your gas wall heater for a nice helpful alternative home heating idea.

Like other regular heating appliances, they are also available in a wide range of size (BTU). So don’t miss to calculate the right size before making deal to purchase! Generally, for 1,500 sq-ft area you can choose 50,000 BTU size, and for 800 sq-ft area you can use 20,000 BTU gas-wall- heater! Wrong calculation of size will lead to the inefficiency of the heater.

For better safety, it is much more recommended to also use alarm gas detector that will give a signal if there is a gas leak. Check also the venting regularly to make sure it always works well. And make sure your vented gas wall heater is properly installed by hiring the right qualified professional installer! Here are more helpful checklists about gas wall heaters!

Finding a cheaper solution for homeowners to heat their lovely home and finally can provide warn comfort temperature to their family is available in a wide range of options. There are many kinds of home heaters, and due to this situation you may be confused to make a decision. But if you are looking for one to complement your existing central heating system then portable heater for residential use (or familiar known as portable home heater) is great idea.

Well, today we can also find a lot of brands and models of portable home heaters. And therefore, you may need to consider some crucial issues before making deal to buy. Below are some of those crucial issues that you must take into consideration:

Power rating or size

Like other regular heating appliances, the heating outputs of portable home heaters are also available in a wide range of choices. This is purposed to accommodate anyone who has different requirement of sq-ft large area to be heated.

The power rating is usually rated and measured by Watts (especially for electric-powered units) or BTUs (British Thermal Units).

Avoid purchasing wrong power rating; otherwise the heater will not work optimal and less efficient. Lower size can lead to less powerful performance, and too over size can lead to inefficiency result and even can result a lot of harmful pollutants inside of the room (especially for gas-powered units). Furthermore, the overheating problem will be more common in the oversize situation.

Determining the fuel type

When it comes to choosing the fuel, you may find two major options; electric and propane! Each type has pros and cons.

For electric models, they are the safest unvented system, relatively safer to operate (welcome idea to be used in enclosed areas), and easier to install. But they are typically slower to warm up, more heating costs to operate and during power outages they cannot provide heat!

And for propane-powered models, they are lower up to 50 percent in heating costs (propane prices are slightly lower than electricity prices), more powerful and quickly performance to warm up the room, and keep working well during power outages. But they also have downsides that you have to concern, such as; you need more concern to the venting system, make sure it is well installed (either for the unit itself or for the room), therefore you cannot use them in enclosed areas!

If you choose to use combustion units (like propane-powered model), avoid purchasing and using unvented models for better safety! And it is more recommended to choose vented combustion portable home heaters!

Check the safety features!

Always keep in mind that the safety is something that you must always prioritize when shopping! And one of familiar ideas to make sure you will purchase the safest model is by considering and checking the safety features! These features can be overheat-safety-controller, flame resistant mechanism, tip-over controller, etc.

Don’t forget also to consider other features that will be helpful to make easier to operate your new portable home heater, such as; programmable thermostat, timer, temperature level display performance, and so on.

As the name implies, indoor propane heater units are usually referred and always associated to as room heating units because basically they are designed to be used for heating a portion or certain of a building! But there are also some of them that purposed and designed for heating outdoor! The propane fuel is stored into a pressurized tank; therefore they are typically portable in design and easier to be moved and installed. Although we can install them practically, but they are also subject to installation and limitation requirements for better safety and protection of property and users! And they vary in and sizes (BTU power heating capacity) and designs of the way to heat the space.

More Types

Some of popular types of indoor propane heaters that we can find at the marketplace are radiant models, wall-mounted installation design, vented or ventless models, and circulating type space heating units! Radiant models are typically referred to as radiant infrared space heating units that will heat the room as well as the same way of the sunlight when warming up the surface of the earth, so thus the object will get warm more quickly before heating the surrounding air. Wall-mounted models, as the name suggests this type is usually superior to be mounted on the wall for more space saving and keep out of reach of your children or your pets.

If you are looking for indoor propane heater that can be powerful on resulting blue flame to warm up the room, then circulating-design space heating unit is one of the right recommendations. It works similar to the working principle of a central air.

And for more practical installation, you can try combustion propane heater that supported to be unvented (ventless models), but if you seriously concern to the safety- it is much more recommended to avoid using unvented combustion heaters! There are more extra concerns when using unvented combustion units to keep the unit work safely, otherwise there are some potential hazards that you have to encounter, like the O2 depletion problem inside of the room (will cause CO poisoning and asphyxiation)! So, once again for better safety; it’s much more recommended to choose and use vented combustion heaters than unvented combustion heaters!

Proper installation & safety checklists

The installation must be finished properly in order to make sure the indoor propane heaters keep working and running properly, efficiently and safely! And there are some crucial issues to take into consideration for the installation (depending on the type of the unit itself). Although most of them come in portable design but they are not allowed to be used for heating bathrooms because can lead to tilt-over accident or even the unit will fall into the bathtub or an amount of water that can fall over into the unit. Below are more safety checklists to properly install and use indoor propane heater:

Like written before, avoid choosing and installing ventless propane heating unit for indoor use!

Make sure the location of the installation is far enough from any combustible materials like pieces of furniture, curtains, towels, wood door, wood window, and so on.

For the installation of wall-mounted model, avoid choosing the combustible wall surface for the installation.

Make sure the heater is safe enough from foot traffic accident! ‘for radiant units (at least there are around clearance of 36 inches in the front and 18 inches in the sides and rear), for air circulating space heating unit (at least there are around clearance of 12 inches from the rear and sides)’ – according to NFPA 54!

And always follow the manufacture instructions on how to install properly your unit, because different type of different brand usually requires a certain different procedure for the installation.

Safety installation issues for ventless indoor propane heaters

Once again, it is not recommended to use this type for indoor use if you seriously concern to the safety! But if you are stiff to use it, especially for heating bedroom & bathroom, below are pieces of important information that you must concern:

The heater must have O2 depletion sensor “ODS”, so thus you can monitor the level of Oxygen in your room. Use also a stand-alone Oxygen depletion sensor if necessary for better safety.

You may also have one listed wall-mounted propane heater but make sure first that the input rating of the unit is not over than 10,000 BTUs per hour for bedroom and 6,000 BTUs per hour for bathroom. This is purposed to make sure that the heater is relatively small in size and incorporate in ODS.

Turn off the unit immediately if the O2 level decreases drastically!

And always turn off your ventless indoor propane heater while not in use!
