Having pets in your home is helpful enough to make you far away from loneliness. In the winter, it is not easy to enjoy the outdoors and even your pets, you and your family should be kept indoors. But there might be times when they require breathing more fresh air from the outside of the house or times when they require doing the outdoor exercise to keep healthy and fresh. And your pets will be able to keep enjoying the outdoor by choosing and using the right outdoor pet heater! One thing that must be always remembered is whatever the kind of the heating unit that you choose, make sure it is completely safe and the unit must be correctly sized! Don’t forget to also consider the outdoor environment in your local area so thus the unit will work powerful and efficient! And there are several types to choose from. The following are pieces of helpful information for you on choosing and using outdoor pet heaters.

How to size the outdoor pet heater?

Like other regular heating units, one crucial thing to concern before deciding to purchase the best one of outdoor pet heaters is the size! And there are some important points & steps that should be concerned on sizing, some of those points are; the ambient temperature of your local area, the pet’s house is well insulated or not, how many doors of the dog’s house (one or two), and the volume & large square feet of the house itself (you need to measure the height, length and width of the house). In order to encourage the efficiency performance, some of pet heating units are designed with radiant heating principle that will heat the dog or cat directly so thus the heater doesn’t need to heat the entire air in the pet’s house to keep warm your dog or your cat.

And it’s also so recommended to choose a unit that has thermostatically controller feature that will be helpful to make the heating system run and work more efficient. Once the desired temperature has been reached (usually around 50-55 degrees Fahrenheit), this feature will turn off the heater automatically and will turn on the heater automatically if the temperature is lower than the desired temperature. For more detailed to calculate the size, you can use a free service of the online dealer store, because in some cases, each product need or use different method to determine the proper size that you should choose.

What kind of outdoor pet heater you should choose?

Like mentioned before, there are a lot of brands and models to choose from. And according to some reviews on internet, below are two of top products that you should prioritize on your first list to keep warm your lovely dogs or cat:

(1). Hound dog heaters

They are specially designed to be used in outdoor dog kennels, and manufactured by Akoma! Most of their products is designed with a smart thermostatically controller and this feature is not replaceable. As the name suggests, hound dog heaters are safe enough to be used around dogs with relatively easier for the installation. There is no any assembly for the installation.

(2). Heated-pads from Lectro-Kennel

As the name implies, they are warm-comfortable pads to keep dogs or cats warm in the cold months of winter. This product is great idea to provide and supply warmth for the calm pets. Moreover, they are safe enough and designed in low voltage. There are three choices of the size of shape (large, medium, and small). With nice programmable thermostat, the pad will be able to maintain the warm temperature more efficient. They are powerful enough to maintain 102 degrees of Fahrenheit, and also supported to be mounted on the wall or placed on the floor.

One of enjoyable and the best places to entertain guest and also can be a nice place where we can get more relax after all day long we busy with our routine activities is patio. Many people usually will use this place mostly in summer or warmer days. But many people keep far from patio when the cold days of autumn or weather come! Fortunately, we can extend the amount of time to enjoy out patio areas by using portable patio heaters.

Today, we can find many kinds of patio heaters to choose from, one of them is portable in design. Portable patio heaters come with lighter in weight and relatively easier for the installation. As the name suggests, they are portable unit that can accommodate the mobile requirement as well (can be moved or carried easily from one spot to another spot of your patio).

Below are more advantages that you can get:

Their prices are usually offered more affordable to purchase.

Satisfied in portable performance, easier installation, easy to operate and compact in design.

Less maintenance costs.

Less heating costs (they are relatively less on consuming the energy when running).

Effective enough for small sq-ft requirement.

And the following are crucial issues you have to concern on choosing and purchasing:

One of the most crucial things to look for is the power rating or size. Make sure you choose the right power rating. It is usually rated in BTUs or Watts. To determine the right power rating that you have to choose, first you need to estimate and measure the large area in square-feet of your requirement!

After calculating the power rating, now move to choose the most beneficial fuel in your local area. The variety of fuel can be gas (propane or methane ‘natural gas’), kerosene, and so on.

Don’t only focus to the quality of the construction of the unit but you need also to check the quality of the dome!

Check the performance of ignition carefully!

Don’t miss to look for safety features and other accessories to make sure the unit that you want to purchase is safe enough to be used in long term.

After having a certain product that you’re purchasing, then try to find some satisfied reviews of that product! If you cannot find those satisfied testimonials then much better to look for another product!

And don’t miss to compare the lifetime warranty between one product and another to save your money in the future.

Outdoor patio heaters

It is undeniable that one of popular options to make people feel comfortable while sitting and standing outside in the chilly weather is patio heaters! And there some different styles of them to choose from, such as; rectangular style (similar to wall heating units that can be mounted on the ceiling or wall of enclosed patio), or the ones with lamp-style that so helpful to encourage the appearance of the patio because this type is similar to beautiful street lamps. Basically the working principle of patio heating units is closely similar to other regular heaters but there are some different principles to look for (depending on the heating design of the unit itself).

So how do patio heaters work? Well, there are three popular types of patio heaters; electric, propane (with pressurized propane cylinder) and natural gas patio heating units in order to accommodate the different requirements. And each type has a slightly different working principle on heating the outside area, especially between propane and natural gas models. If you seriously want to keep the utility bills low, natural gas models are much recommended, especially if your local area is available for natural gas pipeline transmission.

How do propane and natural gas patio heaters work?

The working principle of natural gas and propane units are closely similar! The difference is only on how to supply the gas fuel into the burning components (chamber burner). For propane models, the unit is connected by approved gas regulator to the pressurized propane tank (LPG). And on the other hand for natural gas models, the supply of gas fuel is consistent because the unit is directly connected to the small natural gas pipeline transmission.

The approved regulator is not only important to connect the propane tank to the unit but also important to keep the correct flow of the gas entering the chamber-burner. In the UK, generally most of regulators are designed to fit properly with 28 mbar butane cylinders and 37 mbar propane tanks.

Conventional combustion patio heaters use a pilot light fired, they usually will light first it before operating the primer gas chamber. On the other hand, the newer units have gas valves that are designed to work on a continuous system of pilot. But either conventional units or newer units also use the thermocouple. It has function to get the needed temperature before the gas chamber begins to be fired. So it is closely associated to maintain the heat level and allow the system to turn down the heat or higher.

Below are some important components (and their functions) of combustion patio heaters:

Thermocouple, the function has been mentioned before!

Electromagnetic valve (it is usually located in the back of valve-control-gas and connected directly to the thermocouple) and has function to transfer a signal to close or open the valve; so thus the performance of the pilot to heat the thermocouple can be maintained as well.

Tilt switch (safety feature that usually connected directly to the gas control valve). It will shut off the supply of gas if the heater gets fall or tilt over more than thirty degrees.

Reflector, it has a function to reflect the heat towards the ground.

Gas patio heating units are usually designed to heat the objects directly. Therefore they are built in with radiant heating design (closely similar with IR ‘Infrared energy’) for their working principle. So, they produce the same result of the naturally ‘sunlight’ heating effect (without harmful ultraviolet) that heat the objects directly with radiant heating principle.

How do electric patio heaters work?

The working principle of them is also based on the radiant heating principle. Once we turn on the unit, then the transformer is automatically turned on. The transformer has function to control the required electric supply on the electric radiant heating elements. With a certain electric supply, the electric elements will result a certain infrared frequency that eventually will create the radiant heating effect to heat directly any objects surrounding the heater. This means, the system does not heat the air first to heat the objects. These heated-objects (including people, furniture, walls, etc) will create the ambient heat to turn heat the air surrounding the unit. This mechanism is important since most of patio is designed for open-space areas so thus the unit does not need to heat the entire air in the patio to encourage the better efficiency performance.

In addition, there is almost no moving part; therefore electric patio heaters usually will require less care (easier for the maintenance). Typically, the only component that should be concerned with more extra care is the heating elements or perhaps we have to replace them regularly if necessary. And there are some reviews say one of factors to determine the quality of the unit is the frequency replacement of the heating elements!

Patio is typically outdoor area that will be one of nice areas to get relaxed after all day long you spend a lot of time at workplace. And you can extend the amount of time to enjoy your outdoor activities in your patio area by using outdoor propane heaters. Propane is nice idea for more money saving (propane prices are relatively cheaper) and powerful enough for heating outdoor! But there are safety guidelines and checklists to take into consideration in order to make sure we can use them more safely & properly.

The following are helpful basic safety guidelines on using outdoor propane heaters! Take a few minutes to read these pieces of helpful information.

The safe location to place the heater

Always keep in mind, don’t ever try to move it while it is running. Turn it off completely before moving it.

Make sure you choose a level surface for the installation. This is basic procedure to minimize the risk of knocked-over accident.

The unit should be positioned safe enough from wind, for better safety. But there are also some products of outdoor propane heater that are designed to keep working well in the average winds-speed.

Make sure the unit is far enough (at least 3.5 feet or more is better) from any combustibles (like paper, furniture, wood, etc) that can catch the fire and result fire accident. Consider also that the unit should be safe enough from any hanging trees or plants that could catch the fire.

Monitor your pets and children in your patio while the unit is running!

Make sure to position the unit is unreachable from your children and pets!

Avoid leaving your children unattended in your outdoor patio while the unit is working, otherwise there are a risk of your children to accidentally touch the hot surface of the heater or even can lead to topple-over accident due to accidentally disturbed or pushed.

Never permit your children to operate the unit on their own without any supervision!

What else you should know for the safety guidelines on using outdoor propane heaters?

Always remember that they are designed for outdoor use! Therefore, never try to use them for indoor use!

Before turning on the unit, make sure there are no any propane leaks!

Buy the outdoor units that have good safety features! The features include; automatic shut-off feature if the unit get tipped-over and overheating, ODS (O2 Depletion Sensor) feature to monitor O2 volume in your room (it is so important for indoor propane heaters), safety feature to anticipate a pilot-light problem, etc. Don’t forget also to make sure to buy a unit that is certified or tested by nationally credible testing company!

Check the venting mechanism of your heater regularly and ensure there are no blockades that can obstruct the vents. The well venting performance will give a significant contribution to the efficiency of the unit when running.

Place the pressurized propane tank on the level surface. Make sure it is also safe enough and keep out of reach of children. Be careful on connecting your propane heater to the tank!

Are you looking for patio heater to warm up your patio in the winter? There are a lot of crucial points to consider, and one of them is about the patio heating cost of operation. This point is so important to make sure you choose the right one that can work powerful and more efficient. Generally, there are three popular types of patio heating appliances; electric, propane and natural gas units! Which is the best one of them? Well, each type offer good value but also has some drawbacks to look for! For residential use, most of them usually come with 40,000 BTU for the size of heating capacity. How about the cost of operation of them? Which one that can work powerful without spending a lot of money on paying the energy bill for each month in the winter?

Electric patio heating units

As well we know, most of this type usually uses radiant heat elements to warm up the patio. With the radiant working principle, they will heat the object directly. These elements are usually designed for no-open flames; therefore electric models can be the excellent choice if you are looking for zero of carbon emissions (clearance to combustibles). Generally, they are rated in Watts of heating capacity. We need around 3 units with 4,000 watts to obtain the same distribution and measurement in BTU of 40,000 BTU (powerful enough the warm up 300 square feet patio). And according to patioheatingusa.com, the cost of operation for this size (40,000 BTU) will spend around $1.316 for each hour when the unit running continuously. In addition, in order to obtain 40,000, we have to connect the heater into 240-V electrical conduit.

Propane patio heaters

One big advantage on using this kind of heater is the installation that can be installed relatively easier, since there is not required special plumbing. Moreover, it is not too difficult to find propane gas fuel in most areas. Propane fuel is usually stored in the pressurized tank! Therefore the unit and the tank can be moved easily from one location to another location (more portability and nice idea for mobile requirement).

The common propane patio heating units with 40,000 BTU in size, 20 LB cylinder (standard 5 Gal) was used to test the cost of operation!

The unit is powerful enough to warm up 314 square feet patio.

The cost to fill the propane tank (5 gallons), we have to pay around $16, and this tank is able to work for average usage for around 10 hours.

So we can calculate how much money to run the unit per hour is $1.6

And we get the conclusion; if you prioritize the cheapest cost of operation then this type is not too good because the cost is higher than electric units and natural gas units! But, once again there is not needed special wiring and plumbing for the installation!

Natural gas ‘methane’ patio heaters

The installation of them is not as easy as the installation of propane units with pressurized propane tank. There is required a plumbed connection, and therefore this kind of heater is also not as mobile as propane units! Even in many cases, we have to hire a professional plumber or a contractor for the installation. Below is the summary of testing one of them that has 4,000 BTU in the size of power heating capacity;

It is powerful enough to heat up 314 square feet area of patio!

The gas supply is usually constant and we don’t have to refill the tank like in propane units with pressurized propane tank. Furthermore, there are no up-front costs for the fuel. But you may need to pay extra cost for the installation on hiring a qualified professional installer for the first time.

And for the cost of operation, we need to pay around $0.476 per hour to operate the unit, so this type is the best choice if you prioritize to use the unit that can work at the cheapest cost of operation line.

Overall, the cost of operation is one of crucial issues to consider on choosing and buying patio heaters. But don’t forget also to evaluate the extra cost for the installation, associated mechanical service costs, and the price to purchase the unit itself for the first time!

Outdoor patio heater is the favorite heating appliance if we want to extend the amount time which we have to luxuriate the outdoor areas around our house. There are available some types of fuel to operate this heater, but gas and electric are two dominant fuels that become favorite choice to operate it. It is usually designed will be operated at higher size (BTUs) since its outdoor operation that require the higher energy to heat open space. Like other commonly heating units, it has potential hazards that should be concerned carefully. Therefore, there are some safety procedures and proper maintenances which you should take precautions prior to using it.

The combustibles should far away from the unit (three feet is the minimal safety distance that recommended, particularly for the large units). Those combustible materials are easy to burn or catch fire, such as; cloths, lighters, hanging trees, paper, etc. The location to place and install the unit should be able of bearing its heavy weight. The place installation as much as possible should be also out of the wind in order to prevent the overheating incident. If you want to move the unit, make sure it has been turn off completely, and never try to move it while running! Don’t miss to keep the safe distance for children and your pets from the unit.

Like mentioned before, outdoor patio heaters are purposed for outdoor use, and therefore their sizes (BTUs) are relatively higher than indoor units. The point of this design is as possible never use them for enclosed environment purposes, because of to prevent the higher potential risk of starting a fire accident. And then, if your unit use gas either methane or propane as the source energy, make ensure the airflow works properly. Check the vents and ensure they are free from debris. In addition, the bad performance of vents will make the units cannot work powerfully or optimally.

Realizing that the heating units can result the unwanted hazard accidents, particularly if users ignore the safety procedures, there are many manufactures design their outdoor patio heater products with some safety features, such as; the electric starter feature that helpful to prevent a pilot light problem, the automatic shut-down feature that will make the unit turn off itself automatically when overheating, ODS (Oxygen Depletion Sensor) feature for gas units, etc.

Last but not least, the maintenance is not only helpful to make unit longer in lifetime but also useful to ensure the unit works optimally, properly, and safely. Below is helpful guide on how to give the proper maintenance to outdoor patio heaters:

The cleaning procedure should be done at least two times a year. Use a wet cloth to wipe down the stainless steel in order to keep its shine. We can use a wet cloth and warm soapy to make easy the cleaning process.

During the off period, the unit should be stored properly. We can use the patio heater cover to ensure the unit gets the best secure place.

If you use the gas unit, then ensure there are no leakages. Check the supply lines, hoses, and connections periodically. This procedure should be obeyed before and after using the unit.

The fire risk could be happen due to exposing the ashes to an influx of O2. Therefore, clean and remove the ashes and soot out of a fire-burning, particularly after operating the unit several times. A hand broom can be used to make easy the ashes cleaning process.

The last, if your unit is propane model, the pressurized tank is usually used to the propane fuel as source energy. The upright position is the recommended position to set the tank either while in use or while not in use. Check the valve and ensure it is still in good condition. Don’t use the excessive force while doing connections. Because the frequently excessive force could make the valves damage quickly.

It’s undeniable that if you ask what the staple items for campers then camping heaters are one of those staple items. They are so useful equipments to keep the body warm, especially to warm up the tent in the night or if you choose to go to camping in the early or end of the winter season. Most of them usually are designed can be re-installed easily (portable). They also come in a wide variety of types, fuels, sizes, features (particularly safety features), etc. Some people say that using a heating appliance for outdoor is not as easy as like if the unit is operated for indoor. Therefore, there are some points that you should take into consideration to use outdoor camping heaters properly and safely!

As well, we know that electricity and gas are two familiar fuel types of camping heaters. Each type has the disadvantage and advantage values, which one is the best? It is relative and usually the answer closely depends on the preferences and requirements of campers. Electric models are more popular with their safety performance since the combustion process that result carbon monoxide is not required when they working. They are able to covert the electric energy to the heat energy almost 100 percent, it is the perfect efficiency. Unfortunately, the electricity energy itself is relatively more expensive than gas. On other hand, although we have to ensure the room or area where will be heated has adequate ventilation when using gas units, but they seem more economical and also more powerful when we are getting the extreme cold air.

Ok, the following is helpful guide on how to choose (buy) and use camping heater safely and properly:

Whatever the type of the unit, don’t miss to ensure the unit has already been tested and approved from the recognized safety license. We should also read the safety precautions and the manual instruction carefully.

There are available some models that already equipped with helpful safety features. And some of those safety features that you should not be ignored are the ODS (O2 depletion sensor) and overheating automatically shut down feature.

Concern about the location where the unit is placed (tent, cabin, or else) and how you take or transport the unit to the campsite (such as by using car or backpack option).

Check and test all parts of the unit and make ensure all of them work properly before transporting it to our campsite. If you use the gas propane unit, ensure there is no odor of gas leakages.

If the hike-backpack option is required to transport the unit to the campsite, then calculate the weight and analyze how far you can do it.

Provide adequate space (minimum; two feet from anything materials that can be easily burn) for the unit when working. It is simply idea but so useful to minimize the fire risk incident. Choose the place for the installation that far away from the foot traffic! And if your unit is gas or produce CO2 as the byproduct of combustion, then like mentioned before, make ensure the heater has adequate ventilation to let the flow of air circulation runs properly.

The last, please avoid to use the camping heater units out of their proper function. Don’t use them for reading light, cooking or drying your wet clothes!

Patio is the favorite place to release the stress and get the relax atmosphere either at home or commercial place such as hotel, restaurant, bar, etc after through the busy activity all day long. Unfortunately during the winter months, the patio is no longer anymore as the friendly place. There are some solutions to make the patio can be used all long year, and especially when the cold months come, we can use the patio heater to keep the patio’s area warm and comfort.

Commercial patio heaters are the special heating appliances to heat the patio perfectly, especially for commercial places. They are ideal solution to keep the indoor room free of smoking and let your costumers smoke in the patio (outdoor area) freely. They are not only popular for business or commercial places but also can be utilized for residential use which usually also familiar call as garden heaters. In line with technological developments, we can find them are currently available in many types which start from the various fuels, shapes, models, sizes, heating technology mechanisms, and still many more. This situation is big advantage which finally will help costumers to find the almost perfect one unit product as well as like their desire. Other hand, for people who still don’t have idea about the ideal type that truly they need then those variety types will make them confuse to make decision and choose the best one of them from the market.

Commercial patio heaters come with some variety styles of configuration, such as ceiling mount, in-ground installation, mount to the wall, table-top, etc. How to choose and buy the best one perfectly from the market? Generally, the answer is dependent on your requirement and preference. Some basic procedures that you should obey to get the perfect purchasing are consider the fuel type, the heating mechanism, and analyze correctly about the right size of power capacity (power rating that usually in BTU) of the unit and the large size of the patio’s area. There are currently available for two popular fuel types; electricity and gas.

# Gas commercial patio heaters

There are many types of hydrocarbon gas that can be functioned as energy source, but natural gas (methane) and propane are two dominated popular gas fuel that usually we use today. If your local area is available for natural gas pipeline transmission then propane heater unit is not too recommended. Natural gas heater models usually are connected to the gas pipeline directly without need the pressurized tanks similar like propane heater models. Therefore, usually we rarely find them as portable heating appliances. They also produce the carbon emission lower than propane. Overall natural gas models are more efficient, more safe (because we don’t have to use the pressurized tank), and more friendly to the environment.

Other hand, although propane fuel is higher to result the carbon emission but they is relatively cheaper. The propane gas tank mechanism make the propane models are easily to be moved and can be installed temporarily and easier than natural gas models (that usually need to hire and pay the professional heating contractor), therefore they also familiar called as portable or temporary heating units. They are not bad idea for people who want to use gas fuel but in their local area is not available for gas pipeline transmission.

#Electric radiant models

These type use electricity as source energy (as obvious as their name). They use the radiant principle to distribute the heat energy all around of patio’s area. Some of them also use infrared heat mechanism. We can find them can be mounted to wall, ceiling, or floor standing model. Generally, 1,500 watts up to 4,000 watts are the standard range size that currently available in the market today. The properly installation must meet to the local codes, and it is difficult to understand! Therefore it’s so advisable to discuss and hire the heating contractor to get the properly installation. Although they can heat the object directly (the efficiency performance), but factually you still need to pay higher energy bill than if you choose to buy and use gas models.

And below are other things that you should know before making deal to buy the best one of commercial patio heaters:

If you want to create the small circle hot spot, the table-top model is the smart option. This model is similar to portable model but has already designed more stylish and can be putted on the table perfectly (especially for the small units).

Then if we have not too large patio where usually each inch space is valuable, wall or ceiling mount models are so recommended because they are a real space saver. They usually need to be installed permanently. Therefore usually the permanent energy source like gas or electric is required.

Steel (especially stainless steel) is the dominated material to construct most modern patio heating appliances at this time.

The modern units of them are usually already equipped with the ignition button and auto tilt turn-off feature (the safety feature to make the unit will shut down automatically when tilted).

Some popular accessories of them are cover and clamp (especially for table-top model that has function to make unit can be clamped down onto something). Cover is useful to protect the unit perfectly during the off season.
