One of important parts of furnaces is furnace filter. Maybe because of the cost considering, many people prefer to use the ordinary or bad quality of furnace filters. But is it really will save more your money, especially for long time usage? Factually the bad quality of them (usually produced from fiber-glass materials), cannot remove enough dusts and finally can contribute result bad quality of warm air that we enjoy when the furnace unit running.

Therefore we should to check the furnace filters, are they keep in best perform or not! Usually standard products of them must be replaced at least once in month. But they are also available some types that can survive well to use up to two months or more. The quality types of filter is so influence how the filter will give contribution significantly to keep furnace unit supply high quality warm air.

Some people also have opinion that the not-well condition of furnace filters also can result bad performance of the blower fans that is they can work harder than normal condition should be.   3. Improperly using of furnace filters can decrease air flow across and it can disturb the heat exchanger performance in long time usage.   4. Bad condition of a furnace filter also can make the unit heat slower than before, and it makes the unit consume fuel higher than the normal condition should be. And finally can make our energy bill increase significantly. This condition will look clearly particularly if we use electric forced air furnace.

The filters have ability to simply catching dusts, the airborne pollutants and contaminants to keep them out of the already warm air (that is produced from the furnace) into inside space of our room. We can imagine if the filter dirty, any dusts which pass through the filters rather than being caught will eventually be returned to space inside of the room. Then if inside room is some people who suffer from allergy, of course this bad condition will result serious problem.

Today for people, who have an allergy with bad quality air, can choose to use allergy furnace filter types. Basically they consist in two components that are filter media and frame. Theoretically these types can capture more the amount of unwanted things that can make dirty warm air like dust, dander, etc with over than 90 percent effectively. It is possible to be realized because these models use pleated panels mechanism.

When we want to buy allergy furnace filter, the first thing that we should consider is about MERV rating, what is it? It stands of Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. It is a parameter that can determine to measure the ability of allergy furnace filter performance. It has range value between 10 microns to 0.3 microns. The higher value of MERV indicates better quality, performance, effectiveness of an allergy furnace filter.

  1. HEPA filters, HEPA stands of High Efficiency Particulate Air. These types belong to as the advance filter that can to remove sub-micron particles, so they are really can work in truly high efficiency. Unfortunately, usually they are not designed to the standard furnace units.

  3. Pleated filters, these types are the modified from the conventional panel filters. So they are better if we compare to the panel filter types. They use folds or usually familiar call as pleats to make filter’s surface to be larger.
  4. Reusable filters, these types also familiar call as washable filters. They can be used longer than others (especially compare to pleated filters and panels filters), but they cannot capture very small particles effectively.
  5. And the generally types that is panel filters, usually these types still use fiber-glass filter that usually located in the ducts. The fiber-glass usually is designed in 1” size. They are prefer capable to protect the heating coil and internal fan minimize from dusts, but so not effective to remove and capture dusts from air.
