Garage Heater: Safety Issues

In the winter, if you have a project that must be finished in your garage then usually you will find the temperature in your garage can be extremely unfriendly (cold) even relatively colder than other rooms in your home! Therefore you need the right garage heater so thus you can finish your project successfully and comfortably. And like mentioned frequently before, there are a lot of types and models of garage heaters to choose, from one that can be installed not-permanently to other that must be permanently installed, from one that is powered by electricity energy to other with powered by propane, natural gas, kerosene, solar energy, etc! Whatever your selection, one thing that must be prioritized is the safety issues. Make sure your unit is safe enough either for you or for your family.

Common safety issues when using garage heater

One of popular heater for heating garage is portability designed for more practical installation and more practical operating. The portable model can be moved easily from one position to another; this is so helpful feature but sometimes can generate serious hazards that must be anticipated as well. Make sure you place the portable unit far away from any flammable materials that can result fire hazard, such as petrol, papers, wood and so on! Moreover, the mobile feature will increase the probability of tilt-over accident. Therefore it is much better to choose only portable unit that has automatically shut off feature when the heater get tilt-over.

More general safety checklists on how to use garage heater safely:

  1. Avoid using any form of open fluless or flue appliance in your garage, especially if there are a lot of vapors from flammable materials that are being stored, like paint, kerosene, petrol, etc.
  2. If you choose to use combustion unit, make sure it is properly vented. Poor installation of venting not only will generate serious hazards but also can lead to the heat loses (energy loses) that eventually will influence to the efficiency of the unit when working.
  3. Don’t use improper extension cord, especially if you choose to utilize electric unit. This is simple precaution but will be helpful enough to prevent the fire accident due to the overload electric current or short-circuit accident.
  4. It is better to turn off the unit if you want to leave your home or garage more than 3 hours.
  5. Consider the size carefully? Make sure your unit is sized correctly. It is not only associated to the efficiency performance but also will be helpful to minimize overheating problem and make the heating system last longer.

Other safety checklists & ideas on using garage heater

  1. You have to place the unit in the level surface or stable location. Make sure there are no any stuffs or furniture that might fall over to the heater.
  2. If there is available mat or rug, make sure that the electric cords are not located underneath mat or rug.
  3. There are some flammable materials which many people still not clearly understand to their potential risk that can generate fire accident. Some of them are solvent and paint! Make sure to keep far away these flammable materials to the heater.
  4. Prepare and use an appropriate fire guard if you have pets and children who frequently coming out &in to the garage, for better safety.
  5. Avoid using older unit that is no longer to work properly.
  6. If you use propane unit, and you want to replace the empty tank, don’t forget to open all windows and doors of your garage before beginning to replace the propane-storage tank (connect and disconnect the tank from the heater) for better safety of well air circulation into the garage if there is a gas leak.
  7. Don’t ever try to use your heater to dry wet clothes or for cooking.
