Well, unfortunately no matter how careful you are and how the proper maintenance that you have done with your hot water heater, there always come a time when you have to replace it with new one! Determining the right time to replace hot water heater is essential procedure that helpful to save your money on energy bill, why? Too old unit tends to work not-efficiently that usually will consume higher energy than the normal should be. Therefore, close monitoring is the best key so far to analyze well this problem in most cases.

The big question is when the right time to replace hot water heater? Factually there is no definite time that can inform about it. But there are some indications to know your hot water heater must be replaced or not such as; the old age, the unit have some replaceable parts, bad performance, and still many more. Below are some other points that perhaps helpful to analyze if your unit needs to be replaced or not:

  1. As like written before, the first point that you should consider is about the lifespan! In most cases, the life span of gas and electric models is around seven to ten years. But there are some units that can survive up to more than twelve years. The lifespan is influenced some factors like the technical mechanism of the unit itself, the proper maintenance, etc.
  2. Check the faucet performance! Analyze well it is tinted or not!
  3. Consider about the amount hot water supply! If you think it is not getting the same as you used to, then repair or replace with new one unit is recommended. Don’t forget to consider and check about the leaking. By looking the water accumulation around the unit when running or not, water damage, and condensation can be used as indicators of the leaking.
  4. Then the other indicators that you can use are; (a) finding heavy rust and water streaks or not, (b) the size problem, as an example when you purchase new hot water machines (like washing machine), it means you should upgrade the size of your hot water heater, (c) the energy bill increase unreasonable, it is may caused by the bad efficiency performance of the unit, etc.
