Today, we can find some options to get an amount of hot water like by using electric water heater. And there is nobody wants to have a bath with superheated steam! Therefore it is so important to make sure the thermostat works as well. This part is a crucial device that has function to set the temperature level of the amount water that will be heated. It also has function to shut down the heater automatically if the temperature level that is previously set has been reached. So, it has big contribution to ensure the unit work properly and efficiently, or not!
Electric water heater thermostat is also so vital for the safety. It is useful to avoid overheating! Realizing the important function of this device then there is no reason to ignore the performance of your thermostat. We should check it regularly and make sure it always works properly. The proper setting of thermostat is also useful to ensure the unit consumes less energy that eventually so helpful to save your money from the high energy bill that you must pay for each month. It is usually made with 2 variant metals. Both have different characteristics when reacting to the temperature. And once temperature level runs beyond of specific value of temperature level then both react automatically that eventually result the electrical charge and mechanical movement. This situation can be used to cut the electric power supply automatically or vice versa!
So, if your thermostat fails to work then theoretically the temperature level of your electric water heater when running cannot be controlled as well. And if you think it should be replaced, here is helpful guide on replacing electric water heater thermostat:
- First, take a look at the access panel! You must remove it first before checking thermostats (either one that is located upper the heating element or the other that is located upper the heating element). In many cases, perhaps you will replace one of both! Or maybe you have to replace both. So check both carefully and then decide which is one of both (or both) that should be replaced!
- Then if you sure that one or both must be replaced, before starting your project, make sure the electrical power of the unit is turn off completely. Try to cut off the wires that usually can be found in the terminals of the thermostat.

- Don’t throw the old thermostat, bring it belong with you when you are looking for the new one in order to make sure you purchase one that has the same specification either the model or the size. You can find and buy the new thermostat in the electrical supply stores or home improvement shops of your local area.
- Try to install the new thermostat in your electric water heater. In several cases, you will also get the manufacturer’s instructions on how to install or mount it properly. Don’t forget to plug in the wires to the terminals after mounting procedure.
- Do the same procedure (third point to fifth point) if you have to replace both thermostats! In some cases, in order to make sure both work properly, perhaps you have to push both heavily against the tank.
- Then back the first point, make the access panel back to normal again. Don’t forget to attach it to your heater and then try to set power back on at the “circuit-panel” before adjusting the thermostat in line with the manufacturer’s instructions of your electric water heater.
