Ventless gas fireplaces are one of alternative choices for homeowners who want to get the low energy bill. These heating appliances can be used practically and also can be installed easier than other types, especially the conventional models. However, they use gas as source energy and this is the crucial point that you should concern. Gas fuel cannot be controlled as easy as like wood, oil, or kerosene fuel. It is the flammability substance that does not have natural odor. Therefore, the gas company usually adds a chemical substance to make it has odor in order to make it can be detected easily when leakage. The combustion reaction of gas to result the energy is usually will result CO as its byproduct. Although the percentage composition of CO from gas is lower than the combustion of kerosene and oil, but there are still available potential hazards that should be considered carefully.

The potential hazards of ventless gas fireplaces can be minimized as well by considering and obeying some safety issues. There are some safety rules tat so helpful to anticipate and prevent the unwanted accidents, such as the appeal not to use the unit more than six hours and install the Oxygen Depletion Sensor or ODS. ODS is excellent safety feature that so recommended so far, to detect the O2 level in the room. The other issue that you should concern carefully is about the fumes. Because they don’t require and use the chimney mechanism (unlike traditional wood or non-ventless gas fireplaces) to remove the smoke, then gas and air in the room will react and finally lead the production of fumes that cannot be release out to the outside as well.

Even in March 1996, the potential hazards of them reached at top popularity. There were up to 8 US states that banned them because of their not-safe performance of Carbon Monoxide exposure and poisoning. But they still exist until today in the most states because of fail of conclusive evidence. However, the proper comparison size between the large square footage size of the room and the BTUs size capacity is so important crucial factor that cannot be compromised if you want enjoy and use one of them safely.

The high-altitude areas are not recommended to use them because we know well those areas have the thinner air. Flame shutdown is usually the frequent problem if you are stubborn to use them in those areas. It is usually caused by not-adequate air supply to keep flames fiery. The percentage concentrate of oxygen can be increased by reducing the utilization of other appliances that also consume O2 when working like the stoves.

Well, if your home has in-adequate ventilation then your plan or idea to use them should be reviewed once again. The proper ventilation is helpful to bring the fresh air from the outside into the room where ventless gas fireplace unit is installed. Adequate ventilation is also helpful to reduce the fumes that cannot be released to the outside since they don’t use chimney. There are some indications to analyze the house has poor air circulation system, such as; smelly mildew, when you operating a bathroom shower then you see the lasting humidity fact, and you find condensation or carbon that patch on your walls or windows.
