For this case, you need to reset electric water heater particularly you need to reset the thermal safety switch of your unit!
How to reset the thermal switch of electric water heater?
- Find a mounted rectangular box that usually located on the side of the unit. This box is the controller circuit panel for your water heater electric!
- Then find and take a look at the large red button! It is usually located in the control circuit panel (at the center). This is the primer button to reset the thermal safety switch! It is also popular called as the high-limit controller for temperature switch.
- After finding that red button then press & hold the button for 2-5 seconds to reset the thermal switch of your unit. Please wait around 20-24 hours to make the unit resume at its normal condition.
- If this idea is not helpful enough to make your unit back to work normally, you can check the heating elements. Check also the heating controls! If you in doubt for these procedures, you can contact and call a qualified repair man to service your unit properly.

Some ideas to protect water heater electric properly!
- Avoid setting the thermostat too high! This is simple idea but will be helpful enough to make the unit last longer. 1115o F is usually enough for average normal use!
- Do the maintenance regularly and properly! You can drain the water in the tank in order to clean any sediment that can be negative factor to the efficiency and also can damage some components. Take a look at a quart of water and then empty it! Make sure there is no discoloration. Open also a valve in the bottom of the tank to drain water out from the tank! Use also a hose that can be connected to the valve if necessary to make easier for this cleaning maintenance.
- Use the hot water efficiently and wisely. This will not only be helpful to make the unit work not-too hardly (less work) but also will be helpful to reduce the water heating costs that you have to pay!
- Check the efficiency rating of all appliances that need hot water to work, such as dishwashers, showers, and so on. More efficient of those appliances will be useful to make your electric water heater be less to work.
- Inspect the performance of your unit regularly, at least once a month. Make sure there are no any signs for leaks, rusting (corrosion) and other damages! In order to prevent larger problems, anything unusual signs must be fixed & treated immediately!
- In addition, don’t forget to completely turn off the unit before performing any maintenances and repairs! And in order to protect the tank from earthquake effect, strap it to the wall if necessary for better safety.
